Proximity Switches, Reed Switches

Proximity sensors are able to detect the position, deflection, path, and speed of objects moving within their scanning field without touching them. The principle behind this movement detection is based on the ability of the sensing element to detect changes in a magnetic field. Depending an the application and the material to be monitored, various types of sensors are used: inductive proximity switches for metals, capacitive ones for all materials, and magnetic sensing elements for magnetic materials. A typical application is assembly lines in automotive production. where proximity sensors automate the verification of the correct orientation of an installed component.

Reed switches are a special design of electrical switch. They consist of a glass capsual (in the shape of a reed) filled with inert gas. Inside the capsual there are two contact surfaces. The tongue-shaped contact surfaces are pressed against each other laterally by magnetic force. As a result, the switch is closed and current flows. Thanks to their compact design the switches can be used in almost any application. A common application of reed switches is in automotive engineering, for example.
