The LM2940CS-5.0/NOPB positive voltage regulator is capable of sourcing 1 A of output current with a typical dropout voltage of 0.5 V and a maximum of 1 V over the entire temperature range. The device includes a quiescent current reduction circuit that lowers the ground current when the differential between the input voltage and the output voltage exceeds approximately 3 V. With 1 A of output current and an input-to-output differential of 5 V, the quiescent current is only 30 mA. Higher quiescent currents occur only when the regulator is in dropout mode (VIN - VOUT ≤ 3 V).

Designed for vehicular applications, the LM2940CS-5.0/NOPB protects itself and all regulated circuitry from reverse battery installations and two-battery jumps. During line transients, such as load dump where the input voltage can momentarily exceed the specified maximum operating voltage, the regulator automatically shuts down to protect both the internal circuits and the load. The LM2940CS-5.0/NOPB cannot be harmed by temporary mirror-image insertion. Standard regulator features such as short-circuit and thermal overload protection are also included.
