Retractors are designed to retract a tool or load when no force is applied on it. Constant downward force has to be applied in order to keep the suspended tool/load in position. The torque output of the rewind spring increases as the cable is pulled out of the unit, retracting the suspended tool/load to the uppermost adjusted position when released.
