Current meters with moving-coil mechanisms enable the accurate measurement of electrical currents and their strength through the mechanical movement of a coil in a magnetic field. However, the flowing energy can also be measured using a moving-iron or hot-wire movement. Current meters are primarily used in the monitoring and diagnosis of electrical systems - both for private use and in industry, research and by energy suppliers.

A distinction is made between analogue and digital versions, with the latter showing the information collected on energy consumption directly on the display. Digital current meters also offer high precision and the ability to store data such as watts, kilowatt hours and amperes for subsequent analysis.
