Thermal Transfer Compounds

Thermal transfer compounds are used to improve heat transfer between electronic components and heat sinks. Mechanical processing often leaves behind tiny grooves in the surface of metallic heat sinks. When the surface of other components are pressed against it, cavities form. These cavities reduce the transfer surface and thus the heat transfer. Thermal transfer compounds, when applied, fill these cavities, improving heat removal. These compounds are used on surfaces between microchips and heat sinks, for instance.
