The MSP430F5172IRSBT is an ultra-low-power microcontroller featuring a set of peripherals targeted for various applications. The architecture, combined with five low-power modes, is optimized to achieve extended battery life in a portable measurement application. The device features a powerful 16-bit RISC CPU, 16-bit registers, and constant generators that contribute to maximum code efficiency. The digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) allows the device to wake up from a low-power mode to active mode in less than 5 µs. The MSP430F51x2 microcontroller includes two 16-bit high-resolution timers, two USCIs (USCI_A0 and USCI_B0), a 32-bit hardware multiplier, a high-performance 10-bit ADC, an on-chip comparator, a 3-channel DMA, 5-V tolerant I/Os, and up to 29 I/O pins. The MSP430F5172IRSBT microcontroller is identical, except that the 10-bit ADC is not included. A typical application for this device includes an analog or digital sensor system, LED lighting, a digital power supply, motor control, a remote control, a thermostat, a digital timer, or a hand-held meter.
