Latch, SN74LS259BN, Texas Instruments
This 8‑bit addressable latch is designed for general‑purpose storage in digital systems—useful as a working register, a serial‑holding register, or an active‑high decoder/demultiplexer—and can store data from a single input across eight latches while functioning as a 1‑of‑8 decoder/demultiplexer with active‑high outputs. It operates in four selectable modes, controlled via the clear (CLR) and enable (G) inputs: in addressable‑latch mode, data at D is written to the addressed latch, which then follows D while the other latches hold their previous states; in memory mode, all latches retain their states regardless of D or address changes; in decoding/demultiplexing mode, the addressed output follows D while all others stay low; and in clear mode, all outputs are forced low, ignoring D and address inputs. To prevent erroneous writes during address changes, G\ should remain inactive (high) while address lines switch.
