With the help of input devices it is possible to communicate with standalone computers, laptops and tablets. The input - for example, characters - is translated into signals that the PC can understand. This is done in different ways. In the case of keyboards, for example, keystrokes are evaluated as a key code by a microcontroller and sent on to the computer. In the case of scanners, image recognition electronics convert light into electrical signals, which in turn can be read from the main memory. In cameras, it is the moving image that is converted into electrical signals and thus made readable. In computer mice, a rolling ball measures movements and passes them on to the main memory. A basic distinction is made between input devices with manual input and those with automatic input.
