FI Circuit Breakers (RCD)

RCDs are used where dangerously high residual currents are to be prevented. They protect against the consequences of overcurrent and short circuits, thus preventing personal injury and damage to property. The common term "FI circuit breaker" or "FI switch" is composed of "F" for fault and "I" as a symbol of the electric current. However, because of standardisation at the international level, the official designation has been RCD (Residual Current Device).

Ground fault circuit breakers can be distinguished according to the following criteria)

  • Two-pole and four-pole design
  • Different current carrying capacity: Versions with 10, 30, 100, 300 and 500 mA
  • Various sensitivities (Type A, B, B+, F)

Ground fault circuit breakers are indispensable for additional protection against the consequences of overcurrent and/or short-circuit. As a rule, residual current circuit breakers are permanently installed in power distribution systems. The residual current protective devices are connected in series with overcurrent protective devices in circuit distributors and supplement the pure power protection of the circuit-breakers.
