Current meters with moving-coil mechanisms enable the accurate measurement of electrical currents and their strength through the mechanical movement of a coil in a magnetic field. However, the flowing energy can also be measured using a moving-iron or hot-wire movement. Current meters are primarily used in the monitoring and diagnosis of electrical systems - both for private use and in industry, research and by energy suppliers.

A distinction is made between analogue and digital versions, with the latter showing the information collected on energy consumption directly on the display.
