Technology for the industry of the future

OSRAM Opto Semiconductorsin Regensburg

From the light bulb to high-tech photonics: The history of OSRAM began with the production of incandescent lamps. The words osmium (OS) and tungsten (RAM) gave rise to the company's name. Since the takeover of the Austrian sensor manufacturer ams AG, OSRAM has been pushing its high-tech photonics division. This includes the areas of sensor technology, visualization, and illumination.

The merger of ams and OSRAM also created the Opto Semiconductors business unit. OSRAM's Optical Semiconductors business unit has been promoting the development of power-efficient LED components (for example LED converters, LED fluorescent lamps or SMD LED components) for many years. A special focus is on the production of infrared components for smartphones and autonomous vehicles. New standards are set, for example, by the CHIPLED 0805, CHIPLED 0603 or OSRAMOSTAR product series.

Around 30,000 employees of the OSRAM Group create innovative solutions for different target markets. Whether for automotive, healthcare or industry - OSRAM offers contemporary product solutions.

Specifying and optimizing for the market: OSRAM relies on in-depth and specialized knowledge to develop its technology. With the OSRAM Opto Semiconductors division, the OSRAM Group meets contemporary expectations for high-performance and innovative electrical components - especially in the field of LEDs, transistors, and sensors.

Light Emitting Diodes

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors produces power-efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs for short) that generate visible light. Durability and robustness are key requirements that the product also meets: The manufacturer's LEDs bring it to more than 50,000 hours of use.

Energy consumption is reduced using light-emitting diodes - for example, a car headlight based on LEDs requires only 28.7 watts per light source. Conventional halogen lamps, on the other hand, need about 125.5 watts. OSRAM's visual LEDs are available in different colors (for example, red, yellow, ultraviolet, blue, etc.).

Infrared LED

Infrared LED emit non-visible light (wavelengths from 700 to 1,000 nanometres). Depending on the wavelength, infrared LEDs have a wide range of applications - for example in automatic card reading systems (830 nanometres) or medical devices (880 nanometres). OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has been a leader in the development of powerful and compact infrared LEDs for many years.

OSRAM set a benchmark with the production of the Oslon P1616-SFH-4737 near-infrared LED (NIRED) for spectroscopy applications.

PowerLED® - LAE67F-BACA-24-1

LEDs in OSRAM Opto's TOPLED product series are ideal for taillight clusters or turn signals because of their strong light generation. Thin-film-based LED chips (in blue and white LED variations) are particularly power efficient. The silicon in the product has good thermal properties, which increases the efficiency of the component.

In accordance with corrosion robustness class 3B, PowerLED® products are characterized by a longer application period. The forward current is 50 amps, with a beam angle of 120 degrees.
