Wire-wound potentiometers and helicoidal potentiometers

Wire-wound potentiometers and helicoidal potentiometers

Like all potentiometers these are used as adjustable resistors: Wire-wound potentiometers and helicoidal potentiometers are specially designed for high-power installations, so they can be used in circuits carrying high currents. For wire-wound potentiometers, the resistive material takes the form of wire wound around an insulating base body. A critical advantage is the robustness, since wire resistors are generally designed for more than one hundred million movements of the contact wiper. For helicoidal potentiometers, the resistive material takes the form of wire wound helically around an insulating base body. Compared to wire potentiometers they have a longer resistive track, which allows very accurate adjustment of the desired value. Application examples are radios, machine equipment together with accelerator and brake actuators in cars.
