SMD components, i.e. surface mounted devices, are elements which are mounted directly on to circuit boards. They need not be inserted through holes. That is also the case with SMD resistors. The have a compact chip profile. Therefore they are particularly suitable for automated production of electronic equipment. Inductances which otherwise would arise due to the use of wound resistors or loops in connecting wires for conventional resistors and which could cause electromagnetic effects on other components, are eliminated. Because of their design, SMD resistors are particularly robust. Therefore they are used for instance in the industrial and automobile electronics, where high ambient temperatures and loss powers can occur, for instance in the conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy for motors.
