SMD metal strip resistors and SMD wire resistors

SMD metal strip resistors and SMD wire resistors

Wire resistors mostly incorporate a ceramic base or temperature-resistant plastic. Wire of a manganin or constantan alloy is then wound around this base. Since the resistance value is continually measured whilst the wire is being wound, exceptionally precise resistors can be manufactured with tight tolerances, i.e. particularly small variations from the specified resistance value. Metal plate resistors on the other hand contain no wire, instead they contain a specially coated plate, which permits optimum distribution of the heat generated in operation. Thanks to the compact format, the SMD style permits a high degree of automation. The devices are soldered to the surface of the circuit board via metal caps. Typically these resistors are used for measurement of electrical current. The measurement made for this purpose is voltage drop associated with the current through the resistor.
