Germanium and selenium, silicon and a range of compounds such as cuprous oxide are solids whose electrical conductivity lies between that of conductors and insulating materials. Collectively they are known therefore as semiconductors. They form the basis for active devices in electronics. The become conductive when stimulated by light, heat or a pulse of current. In practice, silicon constitutes the basis of all semiconductor devices. By addition of various materials during manufacture, a process called doping, the conductivity of these devices can be selectively influenced or controlled. Without semiconductors, many electronic devices such as diodes, transistors or integrated circuits could not operate at all.
