Ring cores

Ring cores

These devices consist of a ring-shaped core of ferrite. Ring cores are universal for many electrotechnical applications and can be found in practically all circuits and devices. The best-known of these is the ring-core transformer, which due to its design is characterised by low magnetic stray losses and low no-load current. In comparison to conventional transformers, the primary and secondary windings of ring-core transformers are tightly packed over each other around the entire core, and thus achieve optimum magnetic coupling. At switching on however ring-core transformers experience current peaks up to 80 times the value of the rated current. Transformer switching relays are of assistance here in avoiding negative consequences of these peaks.
