Protective cut-outs

Protective cut-outs

The first duty of protective cut-outs is the protection of consumers. They should either altogether prevent damage to cables and devices or at least limit the extent of the damage. If the values of current and voltage are excessive, the protective cut-outs disconnect the electrical circuits or individual devices from the mains. This occurs as soon as the actual current exceeds the rated current by a certain factor. Cables and devices are thereby guarded against overvoltage and thus protected against damage. A general distinction is made between thermal and magnetic protective cut-outs. There also exist combinations of the two types.
