Optical sensors

Optical sensors convert visible and ultraviolet light and infrared radiation into electrical signals. These optical sensors fundamentally consist of two components: the light emitter (transmitter) and the light detector (receiver). A laser diode in the transmitter transmits electromagnetic rays at various wavelengths – from the visible and invisible ranges – to the receiver’s photo diode. If the ray is interrupted or reflected, downstream electronics can trigger a switching action. Optical sensors have a great many applications in automation processes and light barriers. They control self-opening shop and garage doors, garden gates, and alarm systems. They are used in logistics to capture data from barcode labels and control conveyor belts.
