Integrated circuits which consist of a large number of memory cells are known as memory chips, or just chips. These electronic memory media are based on the technical principles of semiconductor technology. They are soldered to the circuit boards. Random Access Memory- (RAM) and flash memory are two well-known forms of memory chips. RAM components offer the advantage that the saved data remain non-volatile even when the power supply is interrupted. Because of this data saving characteristic they are used for instance in computers as a backup for the boot software (BIOS).
