Light guide

Light guide

Light guides are transparent components such as fibres, tubes or rods. They transport light over a certain distance, exploiting the effect of total internal reflection. A glass fibre cable consists for instance of a core, surrounded by a thinner sheath. The light is continually reflected back by the sheath, and thus is constrained within the cable. This is similar to the guidance of light at reflective surfaces which also allow the light to bounce back from the surface. In electronics development these components are used for instance to conduct the light of LEDs from the circuit board directly to the faceplate or control panel in the case of larger systems or machines. Of course they may also be used within smaller settings of measurement devices, servers or even domestic appliances such as dishwashers.
