FireWire or IEEE 1394 is a bus for serial data transfer. FireWire is an Apple brand, and IEEE 1394 is a standardisation by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Connectors and cables with high transfer rates were initially used to link digital cameras and video-editing computers. More powerful graphics cards and sound cards now have a FireWire connection. External devices such as hard drives for Macs can be powered using this connection. This means an extra power supply cable is not required. Another advantage of this connection is that devices can be connected while running. FireWire interfaces are used in the car industry, for example for multimedia systems.
