Film Capacitors

Film Capacitors

Plastic film capacitors are so called because of the material of the insulating layer between the electrodes. Their dielectric consists of extra-thin plastic film. This is sandwiched between the electrodes, which are themselves wafer-thin. After ceramic capacitors and electrolytic capacitors, this is the most widely used capacitor group. They can be a cylindrical winding, or a stack of individual layers. As quasi-plate capacitors, their capacitance – their ability to store energy – is higher the greater area of the electrodes and the less the distance between them, i.e. the thinner the dielectric. A characteristic of this type of construction is the low temperature sensitivity of all the electrical values. For this reason they are often used in frequency-dependent parts of oscillator circuits.
