In an electronic circuit, drivers have the job of amplifying control impulses. This may involve individual transistors, but often involves driver arrays in which an integrated circuit incorporates several transistors and – depending on the design – also additional diodes. The output currents from logic circuits and microcontroller are generally very small. Consequently, power transistors connected directly downstream switch over very slowly. This not only causes losses but also poses the risk that the gate capacity of the transistor might cause a short circuit within the controller. To prevent this, drivers are installed between the controller and power transistor. These amplify the small output currents from the controller and ensure that optimum operational conditions are provided for downstream devices.
