Dot-matrix displays

Dot-matrix displays

Dot-matrix displays are displays consisting of individual dots in horizontal lines and vertical columns. There is one LED for each dot. In contrast to the tight restrictions on segment displays, here the complete ASCII code, represented by a 7-bit character set, can be represented. This contains all the Latin letters in upper case and lower case, the ten Arabic numerals and various punctuation marks. A further advantage of this type of display is the facility to mount several elements alongside each other to create a large display area. Since however it would be too much trouble to activate each LED individually, dot matrix displays are to some extent equipped with a prefabricated driver chip which facilitates this procedure. Built-in memory chips also simplify operation, by offering pre-programmed examples which can be called up over and over again.
