The purpose of a motor protection switch (MSS) is to protect electric motors from overload. This can be a form of thermal overload caused by a mechanical overload. But it is also necessary to prevent non-starting or failure of external conductors with the help of a motor protection switch. Monitoring is therefore implemented thermo-mechanically, thermo-electrically or electronically.

Motor-protective circuit breakers are used, for example, with three-phase motors. They always have an overcurrent and a short-circuit current release device, and in some cases also an undervoltage release.
