Two components that are not directly compatible with each other can often be connected through an adapter. This opens new function and application possibilities with devices linked to each other. For example, Bluetooth-enabled devices such as smart phones, cameras and headsets can communicate via Bluetooth adapters wirelessly with computers and laptops. Adapters are also necessary in order to combine SATA or IDE hard drives connected to the other port. This is especially handy when older, intact IDE models are to be operated in a new computer with a SATA port. Connected via a USB adapter, they can even be used as external memory. Ethernet adapters extend mainly laptops and tablets, which can only be connected via WLAN to the Internet, to a fast Ethernet port. Conversely, a WLAN adapter provides a wireless network connection.
