Interfaces

Interfaces

(Hardware-) interfaces provide communication within a computer by connecting systems that differ in physical, electrical, and mechanical aspects. In addition, they allow the connection of other hardware, such as graphics cards, USB hubs or sound cards. Basically, there are both parallel and serial interfaces, whereby the latter in their modern version are now preferred due to their performance and application possibilities. The SATA and PCIe interface cards are particularly noteworthy, as they enable point-to-point communication. The signal transmission for both interfaces is differential and not ground related in order to prevent interference from surrounding electrical and magnetic fields.

Interface cards provide the basis for a large number of devices in the field of Measurement Technology and IT. Before purchasing an interface card, however, it is advisable to check the following criteria:

  • Required power
  • Shape and size of the card and the housing
  • Technology required
  • Existing connections - which connector arrangement and design are required?
  • Type of hardware to be connected
