Input Devices

Input devices are used to enable interaction with computers - they can transmit information to the main memory of a computer (CPU or Central Processing Unit). This is achieved by translating the data into a machine language that can be understood by the PC. The more common input devices include the following:

  • Keyboards: Each keystroke closes a different circuit, which in turn sends a fixed code to the PC's memory.
  • Scanner: In simple terms, image recognition electronics convert light into electrical signals that send the image information to the computer's main memory.
  • Cameras (webcams): Here the moving images are also transformed into electrical signals and sent to the PC.
  • (Computer) Mice / Mouses: The coordinates are measured using a trackball and transferred to the CPU of the PC.
  • Touch screen / light pen / graphic tablet: The coordinates of the finger or a stylus are measured and transmitted on a surface.
  • Joystick: The angular position of the joystick is determined and transmitted.
  • Digitizer: The position of the crosshairs within a graphic is measured.
  • Barcode scanner: The barcode pattern is read out.

In general, a distinction is made between input devices for manual and automatic input.
