Transformer

Transformers are used for the conversion of electrical voltage and are available in various variants, such as the following:  

  • Mains Transformers
  • Print Transformers
  • Toroidal Transformers
  • Adjusting and regulating transformers
  • Upstream Transformers

Depending on the design, transformers can both reduce and increase alternating voltages. An example of a common area of application for transformers is the general power grid: The very high input voltage must be greatly reduced to the 230 volts usual in households. This also happens in a similar way on a "small scale" within many electronic devices in which corresponding transformers have been installed.

The basic structure of a transformer is as follows: Two coils (a field and an induction coil; or also primary and secondary side), each with a different number of turns, are magnetically coupled to each other via an iron core. The alternating current generated in the field coil can thus be transferred to the induction coil. If it has fewer windings than the field coil, the output voltages are reduced - conversely, the voltage is increased with more windings.
