Test Leads

Test Leads

Measuring instruments such as oscilloscopes or multimeters require suitable test leads for fast and reliable results. These are used, for example, in laboratories, production facilities and workshops, but also in schools, universities and power utilities. Quality plays a very important role here.  Bürklin Elektronik offers you a wide range of high-quality test leads from renowned manufacturers such as Stäubli or Hirschmann T&M. In our product portfolio you will also find a very large selection of suitable components such as laboratory connectors, clips or adapters.

What needs to be considered when selecting the right test lead?

The motto is: Safety is the be-all and end-all. Choosing the right measuring accessories can prevent serious accidents or drastically reduce the consequences of such accidents. For manufacturers of test and measurement components, the highest possible level of safety is therefore the top priority. The decisive safety standard for electrical measuring and testing equipment is IEC/EN 61010-031. This defines several categories which determine where work can be carried out in the mains supply. The measurement categories are abbreviated with the term "CAT" and each level is followed by a Roman number. In general, the higher the CAT, the higher the safety requirements.

CAT O

Replaces CAT I and refers to other circuits that are not directly connected to the network.

CAT II

Applies to measurements on equipment connected to or powered from the mains, but not part of the installation.

CAT III

Applies to measurements within the house or building installation.

CAT IV

Applies to measurements at the source of the installation (supply side)

What are the special features of test leads and laboratory cables?

Test leads are available in various designs with a variety of different colours, lengths, materials and connections. The most common test leads have Ø 4 mm lamella plugs on both sides, also known as banana plugs. These are available, for example, as a stackable variant (on the back of the insulation housing there is a socket where further test leads can be simply plugged in without additional aids). Connectors with sleeves for protection against accidental contact are also mandatory from measurement category CAT II.
