CPLD

The CPLD stands for Complex Programmable Logic Device, which can be translated with complex programmable circuitry. They represent the technological successor of the Programmable Array Logic and consist of these basic components, which can be linked together in any combination:

  • Programmable AND/OR Matrix
  • Programmable feedback
  • Input and output block (block  memory elements such as latches or flip-flops)

This makes CPLD particularly suitable for combinatorial AND/OR logic solutions that require a large number of inputs and outputs, a small amount of memory, and low power consumption.

A CPLD is therefore used for example in digital clocks or as configuration logic for FPGAs. The main difference between CPLDs and the much more complex FPGAs is the homogeneous design, which requires constant signal throughput time. In addition, they retain their programming information even if there is no supply voltage, as they work with EEPROM technology. The corresponding tools for programming and configuration are usually provided by the manufacturers.
